  3. This file contains the last-minute update that is not found in the user's
  4. manual or in any addendum accompanying the display adapter.  Please read
  5. it before proceeding to install anything.

  10.  
  11. For Information on Running the INSTALL program please refer
  12. to your User's manual in the Section: 
  13.         
  14.         "CONFIGURING YOUR CARD", and "RUNNING THE INSTALL PROGRAM"
  15.  
  16. GENERAL INFO for NEW INSTALLs:
  17.  
  18. - In order to match the card to your monitor and to your system configuration
  19.   YOU MUST RUN "SET POWER UP CONFIGURATION"  BEFORE INSTALLING ANY DRIVERS
  20. - PLEASE REFER TO "MAIN SELECTION MENU" in your User's Manual.
  21. - After running "SET POWER UP CONFIGURATION", run Install Device Drivers 
  22.   and EXIT back to DOS.

  24.           READ THE 'M32PANEL.TXT" file
  25.  
  26. WHEN YOU INSTALL WINDOWS DRIVERS,  THE "INSTALL DEVICE DRIVERS" WILL CREATE
  27. A FILE NAMED "M32PANEL.TXT" ON YOUR HARD DISK IN THE WINDOWS DIRECTORY YOU
  28. SPECIFIED.

  34. GENERAL INFORMATION for those wishing to UPDATE WINDOWS DRIVERS only
  35. - Select "INSTALL DEVICE DRIVERS" from the Main Selection Menu.
  36. - Install Device the Drivers desired, and EXIT back to DOS.

  41. Special Note on AutoDesk Driver
  42.  
  43. If you will be using our high resolution driver for AutoCAD 386,  AutoShade
  44. or 3D-Studio,  please note:
  45.  
  46. 1)  If you have 1MB on your display adapter,  you may select any
  47.     resolution as long as there is sufficient memory to support 
  48.     the selected display mode/refresh rate (refer to chart at the 
  49.     back of the manual).
  50.  
  51. 2)  If you have 2MB on your display adapter,  you are advised to select any
  52.     resolution having 256 colors or higher.

  59. Technical Note No. 76 - mach32 Installation Fundamentals INSTALL HINTS and TIPS
  60.  
  61.  
  62. The mach32 video adapters represent state of the art Personal Computer video
  63. technology.  While following IBM VGA standards for producing VGA text and
  64. graphics, these adapters require additional system resources to produce
  65. accelerated video capabilities.  Adapter installation, while greatly simplified
  66. through the mach32 INSTALL utility, requires a step by step methodical approach
  67. to ensure that the adapter does not conflict with other system resources and
  68. will provide optimized performance.
  69.  
  70. The following technical information is a basic outline of the steps required 
  71. to install a mach32 video adapter.
  72.  
  73.  
  74. 1)    Upon removing the mach32 card from the box, record the serial number 
  75.       (found on the non-component side of the card) and the BIOS
  76.       version (located on a paper label on a plug-in component on the 
  77.       component side of the card) in your user manual.  
  78.  
  79.       This will assist Customer Support and also ensure that the Warranty 
  80.       form can be properly completed.
  81.

  83. 2)    Check the system hardware for internal modems, FAX cards or LAN cards
  84.       which may be using addresses at COM4 (2E8) or addresses between the
  85.       range of 2E0 to 2EF.  
  86.       
  87.       Also ensure that LAN cards, scanner cards and other peripheral adapters 
  88.       are not using upper memory addresses between C000 and C7FF.  
  89.       
  90.       If you have a system containing an on-board video controller,
  91.       consult your owners manual on how to disable it.  
  92.       
  93.       Check and record how much system memory is installed on the 
  94.       system motherboard.
  95.

  97. 3)    Review your CONFIG.SYS file to determine if a Memory Manager DEVICE
  98.       driver is being loaded.  
  99.       Memory Manager device drivers, such as EMM386, QEMM and 386MAX, may 
  100.       interfere with the mach32 installation software and should not be loaded 
  101.       until the video adapter has been completely installed 
  102.       
  103.  
  104. 4)    After powering down your system, remove your old video adapter (or
  105.       disable the on-board video controller) and plug-in the mach32 card.
  106.       
  107.       Connect the video monitor cable and mouse cable to the mach32 card
  108.       and power-up the system.  
  109.       
  110.       If the system fails to produce text on the monitor, return to Step 2 
  111.       and re-check the installed hardware for address conflicts.  
  112.       
  113.       If no obvious conflicts are present, carefully remove all non-
  114.       essential peripheral adapters (scanner, FAX/modem, audio, CD ROM cards,
  115.       etc) to determine the nature of the conflict.  
  116.       
  117.       If the system still does not boot, contact our Customer Support with 
  118.       the system brand and model number.
  119.

  121. 5)    Once the system has properly booted, place Disk 1 of the supplied 
  122.       mach32 disks into the appropriate disk drive and run the INSTALL program.
  123.       The INSTALL program may report that it has found the graphics card to 
  124.       be in a "new or changed configuration".  If this message appears, press 
  125.       any key to have the INSTALL program update the display adapter's EEPROM.  
  126.

  128.       If the INSTALL program returns to DOS and states that it could not find 
  129.       a 68800 based video card in the system, return to Step 3 to remove any 
  130.       memory manager device driver from your CONFIG.SYS file.  If a different 
  131.       Error Message appears, carefully record the error message, follow any 
  132.       instructions listed in the message and contact our Customer Support if 
  133.       the problem persists.

  135. 6)    When the INSTALL program has completed loading and initialization, it 
  136.       will present the following screen (the exact look may vary,  depending
  137.       on the features equipped on your card):

  184.       Selecting the "Monitor Type" option will produce a list of supported
  185.       monitors.  
  186.       If your monitor is shown, select it from the list and press
  187.       Enter.  
  188.       If your monitor does not appear, select the Custom option from the
  189.       list.  
  190.       
  191.       The Custom option will allow you to configure the vertical refresh
  192.       rate your monitor supports for each resolution (ie: 640x480, 800x600,
  193.       1024x768 and 1280x1024).  
  194.       It is important to review your monitor manual to determine the proper 
  195.       refresh rates to use for each resolution.  Selecting a refresh rate 
  196.       that is too high could damage your monitor 
  197.  
  198.       The "Power-Up Video Mode" option determines the DOS text and graphics
  199.       capabilities when the card is powered-up.  Unless the AUTOEXEC.BAT file
  200.       contains programs which can only run on an EGA, CGA or MDA video
  201.       adapter, this option should remain set to VGA (CV80).  This will provide the
  202.       highest level of DOS text and graphics resolution.
  203.  
  204.       The mach32 card can use 16 BIT ROM Access to improve DOS Text
  205.       performance.  
  206.       In some systems and/or some system configurations, however, this can 
  207.       cause unusual operational problems (booting problems, applications 
  208.       failing, Windows problems, etc).  
  209.       
  210.       To ensure the most compatible video card configuration, the 
  211.       "VGA ROM Configuration" setting should be set to 8 BIT.  
  212.       This will not significantly impact on DOS performance and will not 
  213.       impact on Windows performance.
  214.  
  215.       The Mouse port on the display adapter can be configured to use one
  216.       of two hardware port addresses and an IRQ value between 2 and 5.  
  217.       For most systems the mouse can be configured to use the Primary address 
  218.       and IRQ 5.  
  219.       
  220.       It is important to ensure that no other devices are using the
  221.       selected IRQ or port addresses as unusual mouse operation will result.  
  222.       If another mouse, trackball or pointing device is going to be used on 
  223.       the system, the Mouse Configuration can be left at Disabled.
  224.  
  225.       The "Coprocessor Bus I/O" selection sets the access method the card 
  226.       will use when sending or retrieving data from its low memory registers.
  227.       For optimum performance, this setting should be configured as 
  228.       "Auto-select".
  229.  
  230.       Setting the "VGA Bus I/O" setting to "16 bits" provides optimum VGA and
  231.       SuperVGA graphics performance.  The "8 bits" option would be used if a
  232.       monochrome or CGA video adapter were installed in the same system with
  233.       the diplay card.
  234.  
  235.       The "Memory Aperture" feature allows for improved graphics performance
  236.       by placing a video frame buffer in system memory address space.  
  237.       This frame buffer can only be used if unused system memory address 
  238.       space is available.  
  239.       
  240.       In ISA systems, due to limitations of the system architecture,
  241.       there must be less than 12MB of main system memory to allow the Memory
  242.       Aperture to be enabled.  
  243.       If the memory space is not available, this feature must remain disabled.
  244.  
  245.       Enabling the "VGA Zero Wait State RAM" option will improve DOS text and
  246.       graphics performance.  
  247.       This feature relies on compatible system bus timing and may not function
  248.       properly on all systems.  
  249.       
  250.       If DOS graphics or system operation is unstable, disable this option.
  251.  
  252.       The "VGA Memory Size" option sets the amount of graphics memory made
  253.       available to VGA and SuperVGA applications.  VGA drivers and VESA
  254.       drivers may restrict resolution and color depth capability if not enough
  255.       VGA Memory is allocated.  
  256.       
  257.       Most Mach32 drivers (ie: ACAD and Windows) override the VGA Memory 
  258.       setting to ensure that all video memory is available to the Mach32 when
  259.       running in accelerated modes.  
  260.       
  261.       The default VGA Memory Size of 512k is best for most users 
  262.       UNLESS the mach32 card has only 1MB of memory.
  263.       
  264.       For those mach32 cards with only 1 MB, the option of "Shared" 
  265.       should be selected.
  266.  
  267.       Once all of these options have been set, the "F10" key should be 
  268.       pressedto save the configuration.  While the INSTALL program is 
  269.       programming the EEPROM, a 
  270.       "Selected Memory Aperture configuration may conflict.." error
  271.       message may appear.  If the system has 12MB or more system memory and
  272.       the "Memory Aperture" feature has been disabled, ignore this message.  
  273.       If the system CMOS configuration has Video BIOS Shadowing enabled, you 
  274.       will be instructed to reboot the system once the programming of the 
  275.       EEPROM has been completed.  
  276.       
  277.       If this message does not appear, proceed to Step 7, otherwise, reboot 
  278.       the system and run the INSTALL program.
  279.

  281. 7)    From the INSTALL program Main Menu, select the "Test Graphics Adapter"
  282.       option.  Running the "Test VGA Color Modes" and the "Run Accelerator
  283.       Diagnostics" tests will assist in determining if the mach32
  284.       is operating properly.  
  285.       
  286.       Record any error messages and check the VGA ROM Access and VGA Zero 
  287.       Wait State ROM settings, in the Set Power-up Configuration Menu, 
  288.       before calling Customer Support.
  289.  
  290. 8)    If the diagnostics have passed, reconfigure the memory manager device
  291.       drivers in your CONFIG.SYS file, complete the Warranty Registration card
  292.       and install any application specific device drivers.  
  293.       The installation is now complete.
